Two new presenters for Gaelchultúr’s Phrase of the Day!

Gaelchultúr uploaded the first video in the “Frása an Lae” (Phrase of the Day) series to YouTube on 14 March this year and by the end of this month 200 videos will be available online. A new video is uploaded every day and the aim is to teach learners useful phrases that they can use in various contexts.

The “Frása an Lae” videos contain simple, everyday sentences and are only 25 seconds in length on average. Each phrase can be heard twice, and appears on screen in both Irish and in English.

“’Frása an Lae’ provides learners with the opportunity to add to their Irish every day, quickly, easily and enjoyably,” says project director Lisa Madden. “And an added bonus is that the phrases were all recorded on location in some of the most beautiful parts of the country: in the centre of Dublin city and Galway city, in the Donegal Gaeltacht of Gaoth Dobhair and in Dingle, west Kerry.”

Until recently, sean-nós dancer and TV presenter Sibéal Davitt from Dublin and television personality Máire Treasa Ní Dhubhghaill from Indreabhán in Conamara were the sole presenters of “Frása an Lae”. Since 19 July, however, Aodh Ó Gallchóir from Donegal has also been appearing on screen. Aodh is originally from Gort an Choirce and Gaelchultúr managed to film his segments between the showers in Gaoth Dobhair in June! You can click on the video below to see Aodh’s first phrase in the series.

After filming was completed in Donegal, Gaelchultúr headed south to An Daingean, Co. Kerry, to capture some phrases in the Munster dialect with Cian Ó Lorcáin. Cian will be appearing on “Frása an Lae” from 16 September but here’s a sneak preview below.

A whole section in Gaelchultúr brand new website is devoted to “Frása an Lae”. Each new phrase appears there and it also contains all the videos made available to date. There’s a list of all the phrases in both Irish and English, making it easy for learners find the phrase they want instantly.
