Gníomhaíochtaí Gasta: a new book for primary school teachers from Gaelchultúr

Many primary school teachers are interested in finding more effective ways of teaching Irish and Gaelchultúr has published a new book, Gníomhaíochtaí Gasta (Quick Activities), that will give these teachers plenty of new ideas for their classes. The book contains 60 fun communication activities, as well as accompanying lesson plans, to help teachers develop improved communication and learning of Irish in the classroom.

The activities in the book can be photocopied and are suitable for pupils from 3rd to 6th class in both T1 and T2 schools.

There are twenty real communication activities in the book which focus on the ten themes of the Irish language curriculum: Myself, At Home, Food, Shopping, Television, Weather, Pastimes, Clothing, School and Special Occasions.

“Although a greater emphasis has been placed on the communicative approach to teaching in recent years, it can often be difficult to find ways to foster effective communication in the classroom,” says Siobhán Patten, the book’s author. “I believe Gníomhaíochtaí Gasta will prove to be an important resource for primary school teachers and will be a significant aid to them as they seek to develop students’ language skills in an enjoyable and interactive way.”

Comprehensive instructions are given regarding the real communication activities, as well as suggestions for pre-communication and post-communication activities. This will allow the teacher to approach each unit as an entire lesson or to use the real communication activities by themselves, in order to revise material previously taught in class or simply as fun activities.

The communicative approach to teaching is emphasised throughout the book and many of the language functions set out in the Irish language curriculum can be found in it.

Siobhán Patten is originally from Achill, Co. Mayo. She spent a good number of years working as a primary school teacher, and later worked with Gaelchultúr as a tutor and Specialised Courses Manager. She has extensive experience in developing syllabuses, teaching resources and lesson plans.

Gníomhaíochtaí Gasta is available for purchase on www.siopa.ie for €34.95.
