They say that every cloud has a silver lining and that much is true in the case of Féile na Gealaí. The energy to establish this unique event rose from the ashes of another Irish language festival, Ravelóid. The organisers of Féile na Gealaí took heart from the thousands of tickets that were sold for Ravelóid before it was cancelled in 2016. Only three weeks had passed when hundreds of Irish speakers came together in the Meath Gaeltacht of Ráth Chairn in June of that year.
Féile na Gealaí is a contemporary Irish music festival that has gone from strength to strength since its foundation. It has been awarded “Festival of the Year” at the NÓS music awards in the past two years and they’re hoping that more than 250 people will be in attendance this year. The main aim of the festival is to “promote the music, culture and arts of Irish in an innovative way”, according to the festival website. This is also a great opportunity for Gaeilgeoirí from every corner of the country to “meet up and forge friendships through Irish”.
The festival is aimed at all age groups and there will be a Family Day on Saturday, 16 June in the Páirc Chuimhneacháin (Memorial Park) in Ráth Chairn.
Hannah Ní Bhaoill, co-director of Féile na Gealaí, is looking forward to another lively and successful event next month. “It’s evident from ticket sales so far that this year’s festival will be the biggest yet, and with the extra support we’ve been given this year we’ve put together a broad programme of events, along with the best music Gaeilge and Gàidhlig have to offer.
“Although there are plenty of other music festivals in Ireland at the moment, Féile na Gealaí is the only one run through Irish. Féile na Gealaí gives a platform to Irish language artists making music in different areas and who are showcasing the language’s new lease of life.”
Day tickets are available at €35 and a ticket for the whole weekend will set you back just €80. You can buy yours on the festival website here and you can find information on every other aspect of the event here.
See you there!
