Newletter #43: January 2019

Tionól Gaeilge UCD to take place again this year

Tionól Gaeilge UCD, organised by Bord na Gaeilge UCD, has been a major success since it began in 2017 and it will take place again this year, at the beginning of July. This summer school, which will again be organised by the Bord in conjunction with Gaelchultúr, will take place on the Belfield campus from Monday, July until Friday, 5 July, and it will again feature a mixture of language classes, lectures and social events.

“It gives Bord na Gaeilge UCD a great pleasure to welcome the global Irish language community to the Tionól,” says project manager Clár Ní Bhuachalla of Bord na Gaeilge UCD. “The week is highly enjoyable – those attending the school are very keen to learn and there the atmosphere is friendly and positive.

There were 60 people in attendance in 2018 and some of them will be returning this year for the third time! Participants have an opportunity to meet other learners, both young and old, from all over the world and from various backgrounds. We’re excited about this year’s schedule: I think the lectures and the various events we intend to run will appeal greatly to those who come to the school.”

Tionól Gaeilge UCD is aimed at adults in Ireland and abroad who are interested in the Irish language and in Irish culture. It will also suit students, both in Ireland and abroad, who are studying Irish as a subject or undertaking an Irish Studies degree.

During the Tionól, language classes will be held each day, Monday to Friday, from 9.30am until 1.00pm. These classes will be offered at five levels to ensure that it will cater for all levels of competency, from those who are fluent in Irish to those who are total beginners. The emphasis in the classes will be on developing the participants’ spoken language skills.

Lectures will take place in the afternoon, Monday to Thursday, in which the focus will be on various aspects of the Irish language and culture – placenames, for example, the media and the duchas.ie project. School participants can choose to attend an Irish language version or an English language version of each lecture; the speaker will deliver the talk in one language and then, after a short break, he/she will give the same talk in the other language. Cultural events will be held each evening as well.

Here are the options available as regards accommodation:

Option 1 - All Tionól activities, without accommodation: €265 (€215 student rate)

Option 2 - All Tionól activities, and bed and breakfast accommodation (five nights): €620 (€470 student rate).
Accommodation will be provided on the UCD campus, from Sunday to Friday.

As only a limited number of rooms is available, those who wish to stay on the Belfield campus during the summer school are advised to book their accommodation.

To book a place on the Tionól, the entire fee must be paid in advance. Payment can be made online at www.ucd.ie/bnag/ga/cursaiseirbhisi/tionolgaeilgeucd/ or by sending a cheque (payable to ‘Bord na Gaeilge’) to:

Feedback from Tionól participants

Our tutor was excellent. Learned more in 25 hours than I did in 25 years.

I felt I learned so much in such a short time. So glad to have come back for a second year and hoping to return next year.

I learned a lot of Irish and will continue studying it. I made contact with members of an Irish conversational group in my home town (York, England) so I can go to those sessions. It was good to meet people from many countries and backgrounds.

The level was perfect and the tutor was knowledgeable and did an amazing job.

This course has meant a lot to me personally as I’ve been meaning to ‘tackle’ Irish for years. All of the classes have been excellent and pitched at the correct level. Our tutor made the class fun and we had a daily ‘lashing’ of intense but informative lectures. The accommodation was very clean and near to all the facilities. An excellent course which we all hope will be repeated next year.

Bhí caighdeán ard san Ardrang agus bhí múinteoir den scoth againn… Bhí na léachtaí an-suimiúil ar fad agus thaitin imeachtaí na hoíche liom freisin, go háirithe an cheardlann leis an bpíobaire. Bheadh suim agam teacht thar n-ais an bhliain seo chugainn

I liked the general friendliness and the good organisation. Good choice of lectures and workshops.

Bhain mé an-taitneamh as an tseachtain. Bhí an fhoghlaim spraíúil agus suimiúil. Mo bhuíochas do gach duine.
