Newletter #44: April 2019

The Postgraduate Diploma in Translation awarded to the fifth cohort of students

At a ceremony that took place in the Mansion House in Dublin on Saturday, 13 April, the Dioplóma Iarchéime san Aistriúchán (Postgraduate Diploma in Translation) was conferred on the latest group of students to complete the course with Coláiste na hÉireann. There were eleven students in total in this fifth cohort and the qualification they have achieved is at level 9 on the National Framework of Qualifications.

Coláiste na hÉireann, the first Irish language third level institution, was founded in the summer of 2013 after the Higher Education and Training Awards Council (HETAC) granted Gaelchultúr the status of third-level institution. The Dioplóma Iarchéime san Aistriúchán commenced in September of that year and the seventh cohort of students will be accepted into the course this autumn.

Speaking at the event, Coláiste na hÉireann's Director of Education, Éamonn Ó Dónaill, said:

“When we began this course almost six years ago, the country was still deep in recession and there were very few Irish language jobs available. Fortunately, things have improved greatly in the past few years - there are more employment opportunities available in the EU institutions, for example, especially for those who have excellent Irish language skills. Between now and 2022, the number of people working through Irish in those institutions will increase significantly and the Dioplóma Iarchéime san Aistriúchán and similar qualifications will be of great advantage to those wishing to grasp these opportunities.

“It is a source of pride for us that over sixty people have now achieved the Dioplóma and that there is still great demand for the course. Similar programmes are being run by the bigger, long-established colleges, and it's interesting that there is room in the market for Coláiste na hÉireann in spite of that. I think people are attracted by our course delivery mode, especially the emphasis we place on e-learning and on new technology.”
