Newletter #47: January 2020

Tionól Gaeilge UCD to take place again this year

For the fourth year running, Irish learners from around the world will be gathering in Dublin at the end of June to attend Tionól Gaeilge UCD, a five-day crash course in Irish language and culture. This exciting summer school offers a range of events, including language classes at five levels (beginners to advanced), workshops and lectures on Irish culture, and social events each evening – the perfect chance to immerse yourself in a tradition that is both ancient and alive and kicking.

Tionól Gaeilge UCD will take place from Monday, 29 June to lunchtime on Friday, 3 July, on UCD’s Belfield campus in Dublin 4. This year's theme is Irish in a Global Context and lecturers will include Professor Kevin Scannell from Saint Louis University and James Kelly from the Ireland Canada University Foundation. The Tionól lectures will focus on questions of identity and look at the use of Irish outside Ireland.

This summer school, which Gaeltacht UCD has been running in conjunction with Gaelchultúr since 2017, will see many learners returning for the second or third time in a row this year. The feedback from participants has been extremely positive and they have mentioned in particular the friendliness of the staff, the quality of the classes and the wide range of topics covered, from folklore to technological aids for Irish language learners.

The Tionól is designed to be accessible to anyone who is interested in Irish culture, whether they live in Ireland or outside the country, and it typically attracts around 80 participants. Learners come from all sorts of backgrounds and age groups - there are no entry requirements except a desire to learn!

Gaeltacht UCD's Director and the Tionól’s project manager, Clár Ní Bhuachalla, says the summer school has been a great success to date and she hopes it will prove popular again this year.

“We love making the Tionól participants feel welcome here in UCD,” she says, “The Tionól is the highlight of the year for us – old friends will be returning from all corners of the country and we’ll be getting to know new learners from further afield. I’m looking forward in particular to this year’s lectures, as we’re welcoming some very interesting speakers to the event

“Last year’s Tionól at 80 attendees and some of them will be returning in 2020 for the second or third time! Participants have an opportunity to meet other learners, both young and old, from all over the world and from various backgrounds. We’re excited about this year’s schedule: we believe that the lectures and other events will appeal greatly to those in attendance.

“The bilingual approach we use works extremely well - it ensures that no student is left behind, as they get to experience all of the events in their choice of language.

Here are the two options available to those wishing to attend the Tionól:

Option 1 - All Tionól activities, without accommodation: €265 (€215 student rate)

Option 2 - All Tionól activities, and bed and breakfast accommodation (five nights): €620 (€470 student rate).

Feedback from Tionól participants

This course has meant a lot to me personally as I’ve been meaning to ‘tackle’ Irish for years. All of the classes have been excellent and pitched at the correct level. Our tutor made the class fun and we had a daily ‘lashing’ of intense but informative lectures. The accommodation was very clean and near to all the facilities. An excellent course which we all hope will be repeated next year.
