Online EPV Courses: Interview with Aogán Ó Loingsigh

Aogán Ó Loingsigh has been a primary school teacher for the past eight years in Gaelscoil Chnoc Liamhna in Dublin. He has undertaken Gaelchultúr's EPV courses every summer for the past few years. He did three courses last year - Accuracy in Irish (Intermediate) for Primary School Teachers, Video Grammar Course for Primary School Teachers and Irish Language IT Resources for the Classroom. Nuachtlitir Ghaelchultúir spoke to him recently to get his thoughts on the courses on ranganna.com.

1. Why did you decide to do EPV courses on ranganna.com?
I'm familiar with the website and I'm used to the way the courses are run. I do the same accuracy courses almost every year as a kind of Irish language training to improve my own Irish.

2. What do you think of the courses?
They are laid out well, in a clear and professional way. I was able to complete them myself from my own home, I learned a lot and it didn't get in the way of my everyday responsibilities or family duties.

3. How did you implement what you learned in the courses in the classroom?
Firstly, I feel a lot more comfortable at school when I can be confident in the accuracy of my Irish, and the cruinneas courses are a great help in that regard. As well as that, the course questions are always centred around the way you would create a school lesson, based on the subject of the course. Grammar games always come in handy, especially in the more advanced classes.

4. What are your favourite aspects of the courses on ranganna.com?
I'm always busy at home with my own children during the holidays. Even busier, in a way, than I am during the year. Because of this, I can never attend the week-long courses that are offered. I like the system that is in place on ranganna.com. I like that the courses are in Irish and that they are focused on learning and teaching Irish.

5. Would you recommend a course on ranganna.com to other people?
I would of course, and I always recommend these courses in the staff room.

6. Do you intend to do another course on ranganna.com this year?
Yes. After doing the Accuracy in Irish (Intermediate) course last year, I'm going to try the advanced course this year.

7. What plans do you have for the rest of the summer?
I haven't really got much planned. I usually go west to Corca Dhuibhne to my grandmother's house for a while, with my family and my bike. We enjoy plenty of craic and ceol there, and it's nice to spend some time in the Gaeltacht during the summer.
